Planning Your First Ski Trip in Quebec
Everything you need to know before hitting the slopes for the first time — from gear essentials to choosing the right mountain.

Heading out for your first ski trip can feel overwhelming. Between gear, lift tickets, and figuring out which mountain to visit, there's a lot to sort out. Here's a straightforward guide to help you get started.
Pick the Right Mountain
Not all resorts are created equal for beginners. Look for mountains with a good percentage of green (easy) runs and a dedicated learning area. In Quebec, Bromont and Mont-Tremblant both offer excellent beginner programs with patient instructors and gentle terrain.
Gear Up
For your first time, rent everything. Most resorts have rental shops right at the base lodge. You'll need:
- Skis, boots, and poles — Rental shops will size these for you
- Helmet — Non-negotiable, even on easy runs
- Goggles — Protects your eyes from wind and glare
- Layers — A moisture-wicking base layer, insulating mid-layer, and waterproof outer shell
Avoid cotton. Once it gets wet, it stays wet and you'll be cold all day.
Take a Lesson
Seriously — take a lesson. Even a two-hour group lesson will save you hours of frustration. You'll learn how to stop, turn, and use the lifts properly. Most Quebec resorts offer half-day beginner packages that bundle a lesson, rental, and lift ticket at a discount.
Check Conditions Before You Go
Snow conditions make or break a ski day. Fresh powder is forgiving and fun to learn on. Icy hardpack is not. Use Skicheck to look at current conditions and recent snowfall before committing to a mountain.
What to Expect on Your First Day
- Morning — Arrive early, get your rentals fitted, and hit the bunny hill
- Midday — Take a break, eat something warm, and rest your legs
- Afternoon — Try a green run from the top if you're feeling confident
Don't expect to ski all day on your first outing. Your legs will be using muscles they've never used before. Three to four hours of actual skiing is plenty.
Budget Tips
- Midweek is almost always cheaper than weekends
- Buy lift tickets online in advance for early-bird discounts
- Bring your own lunch — lodge food adds up fast
- Look for beginner packages that bundle everything together
Your first ski trip doesn't need to be perfect. It just needs to get you hooked.
